Detorio Brown, JC ’15
2026 Community Service Award
For Detorio Brown, service is about showing up, building relationships, and helping young people recognize what they are capable of achieving. A Navy veteran, Georgia Military College alumnus, GMC employee, coach, and mentor, Detorio has made investing in others a central part of his life.
Detorio graduated from GMC in 2015 and began demonstrating his commitment to service while still a student. In 2014, he and three classmates founded GMC’s Student Veterans Association, where Detorio served as Vice President and helped create a community of support for fellow student veterans.
Today, Detorio continues to serve his alma mater as a member of GMC’s Information Technology Department and as a bus driver.
For the past several years, Detorio has volunteered with CREATE, Inc., a local nonprofit serving youth who face adversity, as a cycling coach. He works with young riders at every level, teaching everything from cycling fundamentals to the skills needed to participate in competitive and long-distance rides. He has accompanied students on Bike Ride Across Georgia twice and, in 2026, helped a group complete a London-to-Paris cycling experience, covering 200 miles in 24 hours.
He uses cycling as an opportunity to build confidence, perseverance, and relationships with the young people he mentors. His involvement has included school-based programs, Father-Son Bonding Rides, and cycling experiences in Washington, D.C., in addition to local training and activities.
His passion for youth development also extends to basketball. Detorio is in his third year as a volunteer coach for the GMC Prep Middle School girls’ basketball team. Wanting to provide his players with additional opportunities to grow in both skill and confidence, he created the CREATE Basketball Team, a travel team for students. He has also spent more than five years volunteering with Baldwin County’s AAU basketball program.
Detorio and his wife, Crystal, have five children. Their adult children attend GMC, while their twin daughters are eighth-grade students at GMC Prep and have attended the school since third grade.
For Detorio, his roles as a father, coach, mentor, veteran, employee, and alumnus all share a common purpose: helping the next generation grow in confidence and realize their potential.
Georgia Military College is honored to recognize Detorio Brown with the 2026 Community Service Award.
