Brenda Scott Brown
2026 Honorary Alumna Award
For nearly three decades, Brenda Scott Brown was a familiar and beloved presence at Georgia Military College, serving generations of students, cadets, faculty, and staff and becoming affectionately known to many simply as “Momma Brown.”
Brenda began her career at GMC in 1985 as a clerk in the Business Office. Just one year later, LTC Bobby Rich, then Commandant of Cadets, selected her to serve as Executive Assistant for the Corps of Cadets. She remained in that role until her retirement in June 2013, serving five Commandants of Cadets during her tenure.
Her 28 years at GMC spanned a period of tremendous change for the institution. One of Brenda’s earliest responsibilities in the Commandant’s Office was helping transition the Corps of Cadets from handwritten records to a computerized system. She took the lead in entering records that allowed the office to more efficiently manage cadet merits and demerits, barracks accounts, and damage charges.
Brenda’s responsibilities extended beyond Milledgeville as she supported business transactions for students attending GMC’s off-campus locations, posting account activity and processing financial aid and personal payments.
In her last years of service, she transitioned to the Community Service Coordinator, reporting to the Dean of Students and was responsible for arranging and documenting community service events for each grading period for every cadet in the Junior College. She was frequently seen leading her soldiers cleaning up the streets of Milledgeville and the roadsides in Baldwin County. She was responsible for the collection of over two thousand units of blood during her tenure. Her greatest accomplishments remain earning a national award for Georgia Military College from the Points of Light Foundation in conjunction with the Make-a-Difference Day campaigns. The President of the United States signed the certificate.
She retired in June 2013 after 28 years of service, but her connection to GMC never ended. Brenda has continued to maintain relationships with former cadets, faculty, and staff, and serve as an enthusiastic ambassador for GMC throughout the Milledgeville community. Looking back on her career, Brenda says the people remain what she misses most: “The staff, faculty and students were like family, and I miss seeing them. Twenty-eight years of service, and I never had a boring day at work.”
Brenda has also been an active member of Black Springs Baptist Church for nearly 40 years. She is the proud mother of two sons and considers their wives her daughters. Both of her sons are GMC Junior College Alumni. She has four grown grandchildren, one of whom is married. Brenda shared nearly 50 years of marriage with her husband, Otto, before his passing in 2016.
Although she did not attend GMC as a student, Brenda spent 28 years helping make Georgia Military College feel like home for thousands who did.
Georgia Military College is honored to welcome Brenda Scott Brown as an honorary alumna and recognize her with the 2026 Honorary Alumna Award.
