Campaign Spotlights

Dr. Landon McKinley

Since graduating from GMC Prep School in 1999, Dr. Landon McKinley’s life has been
anything but ordinary. His passions always seemed to center around one thing, even from an early age- serving in the United States Military. What once was a dream of Landon’s as a little boy has now transformed into something far greater. GMC is proud to have played a part in Landon’s early years. He started attending GMC Prep in the 7th grade and graduated in 1999. His senior year, he served as Battalion Commander.

After his GMC Prep graduation, Landon attended The Citadel and graduated in 2003 with a BS
in Biology. He completed Navy pilot training in 2006 and in 2018, went on to graduate from The
West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Over the years he has served as an ROTC
instructor at the University of Utah and completed a residency in Aerospace Medicine. He
recently relocated to Marine Corps Air Station New River. Landon is an active-duty Lieutenant
Commander in the Navy, currently serving as the flight surgeon for Marine Air Group – 29. He
recently has embarked on an exciting new venture as well. Landon founded an Aerospace
Medicine consulting company a few months ago and looks forward to seeing where it will go in
the future.

Despite all of Landon’s success in life, he reflects on his time at GMC Prep with such fondness
and gratitude. “What stands out more than anything else to me about GMC Prep is the quality of
the education. I have been in a lot of classrooms over the years. I left GMC, went on to college,
joined the military, then earned a masters and medical degree, but the best price per value of any
education I received was at GMC,” he shared.

He shared how the leadership opportunities available to Prep students were vast, and how
grateful he was to have had the chance to oversee his peers and lead others at an early age. “It
was an important experience for me because if we thrived as leaders we succeeded, but even if
we failed at something, we learned from it,” Landon noted. “Learning at GMC how to lead and
how to follow as well has helped me immensely.”

The appreciation Landon has for his GMC experience has fueled his generosity to support the
next generation of GMC Prep students. “I’m happy to be able to contribute to GMC. I’m very
impressed with the school’s “Be The One” campaign.  GMC has really flourished in the last 10-
20 years and I’m proud of what the faculty, staff and students have done,” commented Landon.
He shared how the value of a GMC education has become more and more important to him as he
has gotten older. He shared: “In the future, I would really like to support leadership and merit-
based scholarships, to assist the best all-around students who could use a helping hand
financially.”

We are deeply grateful to alumni like Dr. Landon McKinley for joining our movement of
generosity to give hope, provide opportunity, instill excellence, and develop leadership for our
deserving students.
